Background:
Citronella oil is an essential oil obtained through the steam distillation of the entire citronella plant. It is a clear, flowing liquid with a pale yellow to light brown color and has a characteristic aroma similar to citronellal. The main components include citronellal (Java type: 35% to 45%; Ceylon type: 5% to 16%), geraniol (Java type: up to 85%; Ceylon type: up to 60%), citronellol, citral, eugenol, vanillin, diacetyl, benzaldehyde, methyl heptenone, juniper terpenes, isovaleraldehyde, geranic acid, and its esters.
Citronella oil is a significant natural fragrance. It is primarily used in soaps and detergents, as well as in cleaning agents and insecticides. Its main use, however, is to extract citronellal and geraniol, which are then synthesized into hydroxycitronellal, rose alcohol, citral, ionone, vitamin A, and other fragrances used in cosmetics and food flavors. Additionally, citronella oil is used to synthesize menthol for the pharmaceutical industry and to create ant and fly repellents. It also possesses properties such as sterilization, anti-inflammatory effects, muscle relaxation, improved blood circulation, and analgesia.
